from Virgina
Let me know how things unfold please, and if you get the chance please tell Bill how much he has meant to me.
Specifically, he listened (the first person in my life!) to me describe how utterly alone in the universe I felt (one evening in September of 1963 when we were in the Great Hall listening to Bruce play the piano.) I described in detail the pain/trouble of trying to deal with life while feeling I was living in an abyss (no bottom, no support from the sides either.) It became a turning point for me in my life. He "got it" right away. Never argued back, just accepted what I said.
Later I would refer to it privately as "an existential turning point" in my life.I think right then and there unburdening myself to Bill, somewhat hesitantly at first, I learned the incredible power of listening, which had NEVER been done in my family of origin. I think he was definitely instrumental in my own eventual psychological healing and becoming a "trained listener" so I could pass it on.
Please give him my warmest wishes.
