ammonia is something you might ask about

A friend of a friend who was on dialysis showed total confusion (encephalopathy) when she had too much ammonia in her blood - I remember hearing that her confusion was totally gone within three days of her treatment. Her social and verbal skills came back on-line first and then by the third day she could also say, write or dial numbers again - and seemed like herself.
The treatment consisted of using a feeding tube to administer lactelase? - which induced diarrhea to clean out the colon. I think they just checked the blood so they'd know if ammonia was causing the confusion. The impaired liver was unable to clean all the ammonia out of the blood. Maybe that treatment was possible for her because she was otherwise robust- and not in danger of dehydration. I don't know... but I offer this just in case ammonia is worth asking about.
Fondly,
Julianne
