I lectured in class Tuesday on Banks & Isham (2009). This is a very important study that addresses the controversy over free will and the neural basis for decision making that was stimulated by the experiment of Libet. The students were catapulted out of their early morning lethargy as I explained what Bill and Eve did in this study. Several students in the class had been participants in the research and that enhanced the discussion. It was exciting to the students have such a brilliant study done at Pomona College. As I continued lecturing on the scientific study of consciousness, I realized how much of my understanding and knowledge had come from discussions with Bill and from literature he had suggested that I read. He has been such a wonderful mentor to me and such a creative contributor to cognitive science. He once said to me that teaching at Pomona has a strong effect on one’s interests and research. For me, Bill was the strong effect on my interests and research.
